On a public road a driver should not.
• Disobey any road sign or rule of the road unless directed to do so by a traffic officer.
• Cause a vehicle to go backwards unless it can be done safely.
• Follow another vehicle closely than is reasonable.
- At least 2 seconds following distance for light motor vehicles and motorcycles.
- At least 3 seconds following distance for heavy motor vehicles.
- You may increase the following distance under unfavourable conditions like rain, slippery surface etc.
• Allow any person, animal or object to occupy any position in or on a vehicle which may prevent the driver from having full control of the vehicle.
• Allow any person to take hold or meddle with the steering or operational mechanism of the vehicle when driving/ riding.
• Seat in a position that he/she does not have full control of the vehicle or does not have full view of the traffic ahead, when driving/ riding.
• If a vehicle is parked or is stationary at the side of such road, drive the vehicle from that position unless he or she is able to do so without interfering with moving traffic approaching from any direction and with safety to himself or herself and others.
• Allow any person or animal to occupy the roof, step or running board or any other place while the vehicle is in motion.
• Cause the engine of your vehicle to run in such a way that it produces smoke or fumes which would not be produced if the vehicle were in a good condition.
• Leave the engine of your vehicle running while the vehicle is stationary and unattended.
• Negligently and intentionally deposit oil or grease, petrol or other liquid fuel, or other flammable or offensive substances, ashes or other refuse, from the vehicle upon or near the road.
• Leave the engine of your vehicle running while petrol or other fuel is being pumped into the fuel tank.
• Drive pull or push a vehicle on a sidewalk.
Pedestrians Right of WayA vehicle driver must yield right of way, slow down or stop if necessary so to yield right of way to a pedestrian crossing a road within a pedestrian crossing.
Whenever there is a stationary vehicle at a pedestrian crossing, the driver/ rider of any other vehicle may not pass the stationary vehicle.
The "red man" light shows pedestrians that they may not cross the road at an intersection until the green man 'light signal' is displayed. The pedestrians must remain stationary on the sidewalk until a "green man" lighht signal is displayed. If red man light signal flashes, pedestrians who have not entered the roadway must wait until a "green man" light signal is displayed. Pedestrians who are already in the intersection must cross the intersection as quickly as possible.
Duties Relating to MotorcyclesWhen riding any motorcycle on a public road:
• No rider must disobey any road traffic sign or rule of the road unless directed to do so by a traffic officer.
• Riders feet must rest on the front foot rest.
• A rider must be seated astride on the saddle.
• A rider must at all times have at least one hand on the handlebars of a motorcycle.
• A passenger must be briefed by the rider and must be seated on a securely fastened seat and their feet must rest on secure foot rests astride the motorcycle.
• Not more than two people should ride on such motorcycle, excluding a person riding in a side car attached to that motorcycle.
• You may not carry a passenger on a motorcycle unless that cycle has an engine cylinder that is more than 50 cc and unless the passenger is seated in a side car attached on a motorcycle or astride on a pillion attached to such motorcycle.
• You may not carry two adult persons in a side car attached to the motorcycle.
• You may not carry any person, animal or object in front of yourself, however you may carry an object which is none bulky in nature if it is securely fastened on the cycle or placed in a carrier and carried in such a way that it does not obstruct the rider's view or prevent him or her from exercising complete control over such motorcycle.
• A rider/ passenger should not take hold of any other vehicle while in motion.
• A rider should always ride a motorcycle in such a way that all the wheels are in contact with the surface of the road.
• All riders should ride in single file in the same lane, unless when overtaking another motorcycle in the lane. Two or more riders should not overtake another vehicle at the same time, given that each lane is regarded as a public road where a public road is divided into traffic lane.
Crossing/ Entering Public Road• The driver/ rider should only cross a public road when that road is clear of moving traffic for sufficient distance to allow him/her to cross the road without obstructing or endangering other traffic.
• A vehicle driver/ rider may not enter a public road unless he/ she can do so with safety to himself or herself and other traffic.
Round-About and Mini-Traffic CircleThe rules of all traffic cirlces and roundabout:
1. Always give way to any vehicle approaching on your right, when approaching a traffic circle.
2. Nevertheless, all vehicles ALREADY in the circle have the right of way.
3. Any vehicle that crosses the yield line before you has the right of way on the mini-circle.
4. Every time indicate which route you intend to take to exit the cirlce.
