Lane Changing

If you are driving on a public road that is divided by road markings, you are not allowed to jump from one lane into another unless it can be done without obstructing or endangering other traffic.

Overtaking/ Passing

The driver/ rider of a vehicle intending to overtake another vehicle going in the same direction on a public road should pass to the right thereof at a safe distance and should not move to the left side of the road way until safely clear of the vehicle overtaken.

You are not allowed to exceed the speed limit when overtaking/ passing.

Passing on the left of such vehicle is only allowed if the person driving the passing vehicle can do it without endangering himself/ herself and other traffic, and -.

• The vehicle being overtaken is turning to its right or that driver/ ridere signalled his/ her intention of turning to his/ her right.

• On a public road in an urban area, and
(i) is restricted to vehicles moving in one direction.
(ii) The roadway is wide enough for two or more lines of moving vehicles.

• On a public road in an urban area and the roadway is wide enough for two or more lines of moving vehicles moving in each direction.

• The roadway is restricted to vehicles moving in one direction and is divided into traffic lanes by appropriate road traffic signs.

• He/ she is following the orders of a traffic officer.



Given that in no event shall any passing be done by driving on the shoulder of the roadway or on the verge of a public road.

Vehicle drivers/ riders should not pass other traffic moving in the same direction on a public road when approaching:

• The summit of a rise.

• A curve.

• Any place where the view ahead is not visible and may cause danger to traffic which may approach from the opposite, unless
(i) the driver/ rider can do so without encroaching on the right-side of the road.
(ii) the road is not for vehicles moving in the same direction.

When you see other traffic passing in the same direction and intending to pass you:

• Drive as near to the left as possible without endangering yourself, other traffic or property.

• Do not increase your speed until the other vehicle has passed.



When passing oncoming traffic, the driver/ rider must make sure that his/ her vehicle does not encroach the road to his/ her right in such a way that may cause obstruction or danger.

A vehicle driver intending to pass a stationary bus must do so carefully for the safety of persons who are approaching or leaving the bus.

If the vehicle driver/ rider intends to overtake another vehicle ahead that is not on the left hand lane, he/ she must warn the driver of the other vehicle by giving visible signals e.g. flashing your vehicle's headlamps.

On freeway, always keep left and overtake to the right.

Intersections

On a public road, the vehicle driver/ rider should yield the right of way to all vehicles approaching from his/ her right within the junction, when he/ she intends entering any portion of a public road which constitutes a junction.

FREEWAYS

The following vehicles are not allowed on a freeway

• Pedal cycle.

• Animal drawn vehicle.

• Motor quadrucycle.

• A motorcycle with an engine capacity of 50 cc or less, or which is propelled by electric power.

• A vehicle with a mass of 230 kg or less and which is specially designed for a person suffering from a physical defect or disability.

• A tractor, unless it is used for construction or maintenance of a freeway.



You may not stop your vehicle on a freeway, except:

• In compliance with a traffic sign or when ordered to do so by a traffic officer.

• Within an area reserved for the stopping or parking of vehicles by an appropriate sign.

• In a situation beyond your control.



You may not:

• Give hand signals when driving/ riding on a freeway, except when in situations beyond your control.

• Travel on freeway on foot, under normal circumstances.

• Leave or allow an animal to be on a freeway.




When a driver/ rider of a vehicle travelling on a freeway notices a vehicle in front of him/ her wishing to merge from an on-ramp, such driver/ rider must allow a vehicle to merge in front of them.
