Speedometeres

A speedometer which is in good working condition, must be installed in a vehicle which is designed or capable of reaching a speed of 60 km/h or more.

Speed Limit

A general speed limit does not have to be shown on a traffic sign and it is applicable on all roads.

Unless otherwise indicated by a traffic sign, the speed limit of:

• 60 km/h applies on every public road located within an urban area.

• 100 km/h applies on every public road besides freeway, located outside an urban area.

• 120 km/h applies on every freeway.

It is an offence to exceed the speed limit.

Speed Limit in Respect of Passenger Vehicles Conveying Persons for Reward

A speed limit of 100 km/h applies for:

• Bus and

• Minibus.

Speed Limit for a Particular Class of Vehicles

A speed limit of 80 km/h applies for:

• Goods vehicles with a GMV of more than 9 000 kilograms.

• Combination of motor vehicles consisting of a goods vehicle, being the drawing vehicle, and one or two trailers of which the sum of the gross vehicle mass of the goods vehicle and of the trailer or trailers is more than 9 000 kilograms.

• An articulated motor vehicle, with the gross combination mass of the truck-tractor that is more than 9 000 kilograms.

• Any breakdown vehicle that is towing another vehicle.
